What is Ibandronate?

Bearing the US brand name Boniva, Ibandronate ( Japanese : イバンドロン )  belongs to the class of drugs known as bisphosphonates that change the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body. This prescription drug is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in women who have gone through their menopause. Boniva works by decelerating the process of further bone loss while increasing bone mass. As a result, there may be less possibility of breaking bones (fractures). This medication is quite effective against osteoporosis, even though patients will be unable to see or experience any notable difference.

What is the most important information I should know about Ibandronate?

Taking Ibandronate may cause serious problems in the stomach and the esophagus, the channel between your mouth and stomach. Subsequently, you may experience difficulty swallowing, heartburn, and ulcers. To deal with this problem, you have to sit or stand upright for at least an hour after having the medicine. So, patients who cannot remain upright for entire one hour should not take a generic Boniva (Ibandronate) pill.
